Be Brilliant With Color
One of the wonderful sponsors at SNAP this year was Rit Dye. Everyone my age should remember Rit Dye. As a child, my mom used Rit to keep our jeans blue – faded wasn’t IN yet. She also used it to change the color of some of our clothes so that it looked like we had a new wardrobe. As a teenager, of course Tie-Dye was THE thing. I know everyone has purchased at least one of those little Rit Dye boxes.
Well, Rit is still alive and kicking. Rit Dye began in Chicago with an entrepreneur, Charles C. Huffman, who created a formula of dye and soap that would color fabrics and wash them at the same time. The name came from his friend, Louis Rittenhouse, who invested in the company and became its first vice-president. In 1917, the company opened with the slogan: “Never Say Dye…Say Rit!” As America went through the Great Depression, Rit Dye was there to help women extend the life of clothes and household goods. Today, Rit is still the most popular dye in America.
The Pantone Color of the Year for 2014 is Radiant Orchid. Although Rit does not make a Radiant Orchid, you can create the Color of the Year by using this Rit Custom Color Recipe:
4 Tsp Rit Petal Pink Liquid Dye
1/2 Tsp Rit Purple Liquid Dye
1 Quart Water
Don’t forget to add 1 cup of salt for cotton, rayon, ramie, lines or blends OR 1 cup vinegar for nylon, silk or wool.
